Adventure Gold on the Coast
Let’s face it, for outdoor types, the Gold Coast’s main drawcard is the surf (remember when it was called Surfer’s Paradise?). But there’s plenty of adventure beyond the highrise condos and the best way to peel back the blanket of bling that shrouds the Gold Coast like a neon mist is to hop aboard the Anaconda Adventure Race Express, due to depart 11 September.
Now in its sixth year, the Gold Coast chapter of the Anaconda Adventure Race has gained a reputation for being harder than an Ironman’s sixpack mid-season – the hardest of the four-race series, in fact. Why? Try negotiating the famed ‘Currumbin Alley’ at the river mouth on your swim, or negotiating the cross chop in your kayak before paddling in through the moody mouth of the Tallebudgera River. And then pray that there’s not an outgoing tide for the paddle up the creek to the next transition.
The run? Stunning with its multiple creek crossings, jungle flavoured environs, oh and, watch the strangler fig roots – they’ll trip you every time; and don’t mind ‘Stairway to Heaven’ (the view lives up to hype, but you won’t exactly be floating up it angel-like by the time you get to the top of this killer hill).
Then it’s the mountain bike leg, a roller coaster ride that will have you grinning as wide as the lactic is biting deep.
All good fun though, as you transition to the beach run, Coolangatta Gold-like – you can compare notes with that historic event’s golden boy, Guy Leech as he’ll be there tackling the Anaconda course alongside you. He may have handed the run and ride to teammate Brad Bevan, however, as Guy’s electing to race the teams category.
So what style will you race? Whole thing solo? Showing Guy a thing or two about what it means to be a real adventure racer? Or enter a team, beat the Golden Guru and send a message: celebrities belong on reality dance television, not out here in the field of adventure...
