Adventure Racing - What is it?

Adventure Racing is great fun. It is a sport for everyone, from the seasoned veteran to novices and complete beginners. Adventure racing is for those who love the outdoors, love adventure and discovery, and most of all, love a good laugh with their mates.

BlackHeart Events, Australia's premier Adventure Race organisers, brings you Australia's best Adventure races.

BlackHeart Events have a large fleet of 2 person sit-on-top kayaks and a fleet of hire bikes, which makes adventure racing more accessible and even more fun than ever before.

BlackHeart Events offer competitors traditional Adventure races, in that they possess all of the key disciplines associated with Adventure Racing - kayaking, mountain biking, and running, with an element of navigation, team work and decision making thrown in.

BlackHeart Events run an Adventure Race suitable for everyone's ability, skill level and motivation. They range in length from the Sprint Adventure Races up to the super challenging 24hr Adventure races.

Sprint Adventure Races

"I did Sunday’s race with my 12 year old son. It was the first time we have been able to do a teams event of any sort together....... What a buzz, made even better by being able to share the experience with my ‘little fella’. Thanks Blackheart Events. We can’t wait for the next AR event".

BlackHeart Events Adventure Racing Sprints are a super-fun way to get into Adventure Racing, and a great way to develop your skills and fitness for that next big adventure challenge.

Pulse8 Adventure Races

"The leg pain is a constant reminder of the 8hr race, but try and get the smile off my face… AR rocks and is an amazing form of off-road adventure".

The Pulse8 Series of adventure races will allow competitors to travel to races, compete, and return to the comfort of their own homes in the very same day; Or why not make a weekend of it, and kick back with the crew from BlackHeart Events after the event for dinner and a few drinks.

The first 8hr event, on the 22nd of May 2010 in Northern NSW, was a massive hit.

What's different?

  • The Event - will have a mix of compulsory and optional checkpoints.  Optional checkpoints are aimed at those advanced teams that enjoy making things tough on themselves.  Needless to say, the team that goes for glory and gets the most optional checkpoints will win, but don't go missing any compulsory checkpoints, as big penalties apply.  You like strategy in your adventure race?  Well these events have bucketloads!
  • The Difficulty - We up the ante in the navigation stakes, that's for sure!  We also throw quite a few curve balls at you, so think about your strategy, and keep thinking throughout the whole event.  Let your guard down for a second and the race is gone!
  • The Time - It is safe to say that most teams will be competing for close to 8 hours, which means most teams will finish at around the same time. This is fantastic as all teams will then settle in for a fully catered dinner followed by presentations and, if you choose to stay around for a while, a few drinks with new friends and rivals.
  • Scoring - Leave the scoring to us, you'll have enough to think about.  However, in a nutshell - clear the compulsory checkpoints and you will get a finish time without bonus points.  As soon as you collect optional checkpoints, you start to accumulate points.  The rule of thumb is any team with points will beat any team that doesn't have points.  But beware!  Miss compulsory checkpoints in favour of optionals and you'll cop massive penalties, so know what level you're at and be conservative in your approach.  If you find that you can't complete all mandatory checkpoints, don't despair.  As long as you finish the event before the 8 hour mark, you will receive a valid finishing position.
Level: Confident beginners through to hard-core experienced adventure racers.

Length: 8 hours.

Inclusions: Race, kayak/PFD & paddles, hearty post race dinner, maps and a super-fun and immensely rewarding day of competition.

Upcoming Pulse8 Dates:

Here at BlackHeart Events, we spend a lot of time on the road, and it always amazing me that when I reach for the bag of "Natural Confectionary", Amanda goes reaching for the Goji berries.  So, what the heck are Goji berries, and what's the attraction?

Every year it seems there is an ultimate well being silver bullet proliferating on health food store shelves promising amazing benefits. GOJI or Chinese Wolfberry is one of a number of adaptogens with the added attraction of being derived from an exotically originated Tibetan location (great for marketing hype). Digging beneath the hype, there is an emerging body of solid science around some of the tabloid claims that Goji is an efficacious adaptogen.

Enduring road and MTB training in sub zero conditions day in day out is enough to make you either take up lawn bowls or start thinking of effective alternatives.

If you are going to ’sacrifice’ hard miles in the saddle for an indoor regime (other than pure ergo work) you must ensure the routine trains bike specific neuro-muscular pathways and makes a contribution to strength, power and calorie consumption.

A popular alternate training regime in Europe and North America is the lamely labeled ‘bike circuit training’; lame by name but if done correctly powerful by nature.
